Clinical Interest: Hemophilia and bleeding disorders; Thrombosis; Paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria; Atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome
Research: My work focuses on the care of patients with hematological disorders and clinical research in bleeding disorders, paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH), and atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS). In clinic, I see patients with a broad spectrum of hematology problems from anemia, thrombotic microangiopathies, bleeding disorders, and clotting disorders. I see patients at the Center for Advanced Medicine as well as at Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital and CAM South County Clinic.
My clinical research is focused on bleeding disorders. We are enrolling patients in the American Thrombosis and Hemostasis Network database of those with bleeding and blood clotting disorders. This database consists of demographic information and outcomes data on patients and will be used to further research into these disorders. As part of this, we also collaborate with the Centers for Disease Control for disease surveillance in those with bleeding disorders. Currently, we are offering the opportunity for gene therapy in clinical trials for the treatment of Hemophilia A.
I also have a passion for the care of those with complement disorders including PNH, aHUS, and cold agglutinin disease. In conjunction with Alexion Pharmaceuticals, I have registries open to enroll patients with aHUS and PNH to learn more about the presentation and outcomes of these rare disorders. I also have clinical trials using new therapies for treatment of PNH and aHUS.
Last, Washington University is a federally-designated Hemophilia Treatment Center. We provide exceptional care to both pediatric and adult patients with bleeding and blood clotting disorders. We offer comprehensive care to our bleeding disorder patients with specialized clinics that encompass care from a physician/nurse practitioner, nurse, social worker, and physical therapist. These clinics are offered monthly at the Center for Advanced Medicine, quarterly at CAM South Couny, and twice a year at Barnes West County. I also have satellite clinics twice a year for those with bleeding disorders in Columbia, MO, and Carterville, IL
